Tram-Inspired All-Abilities Playground

Waratah Park All Abilities Playground
Sutherland Shire Council

The new Waratah Park All Abilities Playground in Sutherland not only offers an innovative and inclusive playspace but also celebrates the area’s transport history and natural environment.

Constructed for Sutherland Shire Council, this playspace is packed with inclusive and imaginative recreation opportunities from a double flying fox (with an accessible seat!) to a sandpit and water play area, accessible carousel, a hillside tunnel with overhead climbing area designed as a native Waratah flower, swings, nature play and musical instruments, alongside shaded seating areas and safe, accessible pathways.

Play elements reflect the old Sutherland–Cronulla steam tramline, with original tram wheels and tracks as well as ‘tram stop’ signage donated by the Sydney Tramway Museum located nearby, and a replica tram ticket booth built by the Menai Men’s Shed, bringing some of the local history to life to spark young imaginations.

Our works on this project included demolition, excavation and earthworks, drainage and electrical works. In addition, garden beds, pathways and a junior bike path were constructed and stunning sandstone logs were installed. Work on the playground involved installing the tunnel mound, along with the sand and water sensory play area followed by the installation of musical instruments, swings, an accessible carousel, a double flying fox (one with an inclusive seat!), a nature play area, plus a climbing structure with two slides and a birds' nest! Finally, we added park furniture such as shelters and seating, lighting, fencing, and the finishing touches with soft landscaping, including turfing and planting.

This regional playground is a space for everyone to connect, explore and create memories. Come down and see what makes this playground truly special!

Congratulations to the Waratah Park All Abilities Playground winning the 2026 Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (IPWEA) NSW & ACT Engineering Excellence Award for Design and Construction of a Public Works Project ($1.5m–$5m)! We are delighted that this outstanding playground we delivered for Sutherland Shire Council received this recognition and are proud of the quality workmanship and collaborative effort by our team on this project! It was a privilege to help create this vibrant and inclusive community space for the residents and visitors of this much-loved Sutherland Shire park.
