Heritage School Site Rejuvenation
Old Menangle School, which originally opened its doors in 1871 and spans a large central area of the Menangle Village, rich in both agricultural history and heritage links, has been enhanced as per the Wollondilly Shire Council’s aim into a strong community hub!
Comprehensive restoration works of the original heritage School Building were completed comprising of new roof, refurbishment of heritage windows, balustrades and structural elements, including stone and brick external walls, front stairs and new accessibility ramp, together with internal renovations consisting of new ceilings, flooring, doors, electrical works and painting. This was complemented by installation of an air conditioning system, lighting and audio-visual suite. An extension to the School Building further incorporated new kitchen and bathroom facilities, enabling this facility and Park to cater for events.
In addition to preserving its' historical charm, the site now boasts a variety of new recreational options with a multipurpose court with basketball and netball hoops and a playground with both traditional and nature play elements, enriching the community's leisure opportunities.
The existing toilet blocks were deconstructed, with the original stone and bricks recycled into the newly constructed brick pavements, followed by construction of a new amenities building.
A 31-space carpark (including accessible parking space) and adjacent new amenities building facilitates visitors to the Park and the general public at the Menangle Village. Raised community garden beds, outdoor kitchen, barbeques, picnic settings, arbors, maintenance shed and shelter, brick seating, lighting for pathways, carpark and walls, table tennis, perimeter fencing along the rail corridor, complemented with accessible footpath network provide access to the new amenities and Old School buildings with softscapes to finish, make it a perfect spot for community gatherings!
The revitalisation of the Old Menangle School Site, blending historical restoration with modern amenities, has become a vibrant, purposeful and well received community space.
